GM hopes to produce autonomous vehicle by 2019

The legal problem in testing the vehicles is that standards require compliance through tests with a human driver and manual steering, acceleration and braking controls.

The future of self-driving cars may arrive sooner than you think, if General Motors gets its way.

The new General Motors vehicle is the fourth generation of its driverless, all-electric Chevy Bolts, according to The Verge. They also won't have an owner since GM will deploy its self-driving vehicle for ride-hailing, not personal use.

Dan Ammann, president of GM, told investors on December 30 that the potential revenue from a single autonomous vehicle working as a taxi is far greater than that of comparable cars sold by GM today.

The first market-ready self-driving auto is poised to come from General Motors Co., which submitted its federal safety proposal Thursday to put a robotic vehicle with no steering wheel or gas pedal on public roads in 2019.

GM also released today a safety report for its self-driving cars, becoming the second automaker to do so.

In an image of the dashboard - and the video below - you can see the somewhat unsettling result.

The Cruise AV is based on the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle, which was launched in 2017 and has a driving range in excess of 200 miles.

India to rethink colonial-era law criminalising gay sex
Several supreme court judges noted that sexual orientation fell under the privacy umbrella. Supreme Court has decided against hearing an appeal.

GM is proposing to meet the standards in a different kind of way.

"What we can do is put the equivalent of the passenger side airbag on that side as well", said Ammann.

The interior (top) and the exterior (below), as seen in the company's 2018 Self-Driving Safety Report, look to be based heavily on the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle, now on sale in the US, Europe and other overseas markets. Companies need to get large numbers of self-driving cars on the road before they can focus on that. General Motors joins various companies like Ford and Uber to test and develop autonomous taxis for use in North America, Europe, and Asia.

GM says its really close to having the permission to fully roll out the vehicle nationwide, as they can already do so in seven U.S. states without having any legal problems.

"What's really special about this is if you look back 20 years from now, it's the first vehicle without a steering wheel and pedals", said Kyle Vogt, chief executive officer of Cruise Automation, a San Francisco-based unit that is developing the software for GM's self-driving cars, Bloomberg reports.

Speaking of accidents, GM has not one, but two data recorders in each of its autonomous vehicles to store and protect information in the event of a crash. "We collect and analyze petabytes of data to ensure our vehicles operate safely and reliably".

Per GM, the Cruise AV was developed to comply with NHTSA's 12 safety elements for self-driving vehicles laid out in its Automated Driving Systems 2.0-A Vision for Safety voluntary guidance, including vehicle cybersecurity, crashworthiness, consumer education and training, and minimal risk condition (or safe-state fallback).
