Eight Earthquakes Strike Iran-Iraq Border, Injuring 4

The border between Iran and Iraq was rattled by three magnitude-5 earthquakes, striking Baghdad on Thursday, AP said, citing the US Geological Survey. According to the Azad News Agency, a crisis management team is being deployed to Kermanshah, although there are now no reports of any injuries. The eighth quake struck near Mehran in western Iraq.

All the earthquakes struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the USGS.

It is unclear how much damage was inflicted by Thursday's natural disaster as the epicenter hit one of the most vulnerable areas in Iran's Kurdish region. The temblors also all were very shallow, which causes more ground shaking and potential damage, particularly in places without strict building codes. In Iraq, nine people were killed and 550 were injured, according to the United Nations.
