Platelet, blood donors needed

The American Red Cross on Monday expressed an urgent need for blood and platelet donors of all blood types to donate to help erase a significant winter blood shortage.

The winter season is usually tough, but severe winter storms have been making it even harder, forcing the Red Cross to cancel blood drives throughout the region. Their shelf life is very short-only 5 days-while whole blood or red cell donations can last 42 days.

Donations go to local hospitals first but the blood supply is also national. "The Red Cross is doing everything we can to ensure blood products are available for hospital patients during these hard winter months, but we need help from our regular donors - as well as those who are willing to donate for the first time - to give as soon as possible".

The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 donations every day for patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide.

Type B negative: The blood type that can be transfused to type B Rh-positive and negative patients.

If the current trend of bad weather continues without more blood donors coming in, Michigan Blood's inventory could drop to critical levels. Any healthy person 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) may be eligible to donate, although there are height and weight restrictions for people 16 to 18 years old.

"It's an important blood type for emergency situations", Lewis said.

Donors are encouraged to visit the STBTC website at www.southtexasblood.org to find a blood drive near them or to schedule an appointment.
