Bannon Apologizes for Role in Book Critical of White House

Trump tweeted about the interview later Sunday morning.

Wolff said he conducted over 200 interviews for his new book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", in which "every" staffer described Trump as mentally unfit to lead and mentally unstable.

Bannon claimed in his statement that the comments in the book were aimed not at Trump or his family but at Paul Manafort - Trump's former campaign chairman, who was sacked and is facing charges as part of special counsel Robert S. Muller's Russia investigation - who, Bannon said, should have known how the Russians - whom he called "duplicitous, cunning and not our friends" - operate.

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency", Bannon said.

"My support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda", Mr. Bannon said in the statement.

U.S. President Donald Trump's former strategist Steve Bannon on Sunday backed away from derogatory comments ascribed to him about Trump's son in a new book that sparked White House outrage and could threaten Bannon's influence as a would-be conservative power broker.

Chief policy adviser Stephen Miller, in a combative appearance on CNN, described the book as "nothing but a pile of trash through and through".

Speaking to Fox News, Mr Pompeo said allegations about the United States president's lack of competence were "absurd, just pure fantasy".

Bannon did not specifically dispute the quotes, but said his criticism was meant for Manafort, who is being prosecuted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller as part of a probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election. "This is like taking it to a whole new low", she told ABC's "This Week".

The book portrays Trump, a former reality TV star who took office almost a year ago, as mentally unstable and unfit for the demands of his job.

Four policemen killed in Sopore IED blast
Militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad claimed the responsibility for the attack, according to a local news agency. Militants had planted the IED near a shop in a lane between the "Chotta Bazaar" and "Bada Bazaar" in Sopore.

Miller's interview on CNN's "State of the Union" quickly grew heated, with Miller criticizing CNN's coverage and moderator Jake Tapper pressing Miller to answer his questions and accusing him of speaking to only one viewer: Trump. He then added, "I think I've wasted enough of my viewers' time" before cutting off the interview. "Watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"

Trump defended his background and success during an impromptu audience with reporters and in a series of tweets on Saturday.

"I've had to put up with the Fake News from the first day I announced that I would be running for President".

The president also referred to Wolff's book as a "Fake Book" written by a "totally discredited author" in a separate tweet.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has dismissed concerns about Donald Trump's mental fitness, saying the US president acts in what he sees as the best interests of his country.

Cotton said this tell-all book is similar to other claims the media made when describing other Republican presidents.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders this past week called such suggestions "disgraceful and laughable".

The statement continued: "Everything I have to say about the ridiculous nature of the Russian "collusion" investigation I said on my 60 Minutes interview". It didn't exist, OK?

Bannon said in a statement released on Sunday that his comments were directed at Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, and not aimed at the president's son.

"The story that I have told seems to present this presidency in such a way that it says he can't do his job", Wolff said.
