Actor Jerry Van Dyke Dies at 86

His widow, Shirley, told TMZ that Van Dyke, 86, died at their Arkansas ranch with her by his side, and that his health had been deteriorating since a vehicle accident over two years ago.

He died at their home in Arkansas less than a month after a visit from his brother. He first ventured into the entertainment world as a stand-up comedian but is perhaps best-known for his role as Luther Van Dam on the sitcom "Coach".

Van Dyke was born in Danville, Illinois to his stenographer mother and salesman father.

Van Dyke was characteristically good-humored about the meandering nature of his career, telling USA Today in 1990 that the Emmy nominations he received for the role marked its peak. "This is as good as it's ever been'".
