Sightseeing balloon crashes in Egypt's Luxor city killing one U.S. tourist

The incident comes after 19 people - mostly Asian and European tourists - were killed near the same city in a hot air balloon crash in 2013, when it caught fire in a mid-air gas explosion.

In 2016, 22 Chinese tourists were injured when their balloon crash landed, after which Egypt temporarily halted balloon rides. The balloon was carrying 20 people.

The crash happened in Luxor, a popular tourist destination on the banks of the Nile River in southern Egypt.

The balloon, carrying tourists from different nationalities and Egyptians, crashed to the west of the city of Luxor, state-run news agency MENA reported.

Luxor has witnessed hot air balloon accidents in past years.

In 2015, at least 19 people, a lot of them Asian and European tourists, died near Luxor when a hot air balloon caught fire and crashed after a mid-air gas explosion. Such flights usually start before sunrise and pass over green fields leading to the Valley of the Kings - the burial site of famous boy king Tutankhamun and other pharaohs.
