Alexa will soon be able to control ovens and microwaves

In a bid to strengthen Alexa's presence in the kitchen, Amazon has invested in a smart oven company called June Oven via its venture capital fund Alexa Fund.

Recent reports reveal that Whirlpool will be among the first appliance brands to feature Alexa integration, enabling consumers to "soon" "configure, start, and operate" its suite of smart microwaves. This means users will be able to utilize Alexa to do things like control volume and change inputs with different voice controls. The move will lead to June adding Alexa commands once oven support is available. Appliances that have pre-sets are needed - like microwave ovens, conventional ovens, and presumably other cooking devices like slow cookers and perhaps bread makers.

Unfortunately Amazon only sells the Basic Edition of its Fire TV in Australia and we miss out on USA models which pack more grunt, support faster Wi-Fi, handle Ultra HD streaming and work with Amazon's talkative Alexa smart assistant.

Initially, there are four new capability interfaces in the Smart Home Skill API and it includes Alexa.Cooking, Alexa.Cooking.TimeController, Alexa.TimeHoldController, and Alexa.CookingPresetController.

The remote from Amazon Prime also is voice enabled, so consumers can say which program to find.

GE Appliances, LG, Samsung, and Kenmore also plan to add Alexa support for their ovens, as well as other appliances, at some point in the future. Whilst Amazon has a variety of vendor partners, it's not certain how rapidly support will roll out.

That's because today Amazon introduced built-in cooking controls for cooking appliances into the Alexa smart home API. "Amazon has hinted in the past that it will launch a paid search ad product for Alexa, but sources said that the latest talks show the e-commerce giant is preparing to make a serious run at the ad market as early as this year". Amazon explained further telling CNET that, "we're making it easier for device manufacturers to build for Alexa by providing a common framework".
