Doctors' countrywide strike against NMC bill begins

"The amendments should be in favour of doctors", Dr Bharath Kumar, president, Karnataka Medical Students and Youth Doctors Association.

Opposing the National Medical Commission Bill, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 12-hour strike across the country on Tuesday.

"We spoke to Indian Medical Association yesterday".

Clause 49 of the Bill calls for a joint sitting of the National Medical Commission, the Central Council of Homoeopathy and the Central Council of Indian Medicine at least once a year "to enhance the interface between homoeopathy, Indian Systems of Medicine and modern systems of medicine".

Drunk man leads police to hotel room arsenal
The man, who has not been identified, was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing. Officers and staff found the weapons and ammo when they went into his room to grab his belongings.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill was tabled in Parliament on Friday that will replace the Medical Council of India besides allowing practitioners of alternative medicines, such as homoeopathy and ayurveda to practice allopathy after completing a bridge course.

Speaking to International Business Times India, IMA National President Dr Ravi Wankhedkar and Secretary Dr RN Tandon claimed the government was trying to manipulate the MCI with the NMC Bill. "The IMA strongly opposes this Bill and has no option but to take the issues to our patients and the people". "Talks are on. We have heard them and also presented our views".

Terming the Bill as "anti-people and anti-patient", the association in a statement has stated that the Bill purported to eradicate corruption is "designed to open the floodgates of corruption". In Kerala, medical students have started an indefinite hunger strike against the Bill. Over 40,000 doctors were participating in the strike in Maharashtra, while reports of the strike and protests were coming in from across the country. A 25-member commission will replace the elected MCI, the Bill says. According to it, the 15% seats of the private medical colleges will be decided by the management of fees. He said that the new proposal in the bill is not acceptable to them.

Tandon also said: "The NMC proposes two registers - one for the urban and the other for the ones who have undertaken the bridge course".
