5 deputies shot, 1 fatally, in shooting near Denver

Three other deputies and a police officer were also shot Sunday morning, along with two civilians.

Two civilians were also injured by the suspected gunman, who was killed and is no longer a threat, officials said.

"All of them were shot very, very quickly", he said.

The shooting happened at the Copper Canyon Apartments in Highlands Ranch.

Authorities say multiple sheriff's deputies are "down" after being called to scene south of Denver. "It was nearly immediately after that" that the suspect shot the officers.

A source in the sheriff's office told KKTV that the situation is "not looking good for us" as deputies were shot at.

According to Douglas County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lauren Lekander, officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call around 6 a.m. when shots were fired from the home.

She said a SWAT team was responding, the Times reported. Residents living in the vicinity were asked to take shelter in place, and avoid windows and exterior walls.

Due to this incident, the following agencies are on accident alert: Douglas County, Parker Police Department, Lone Tree Police Department, Castle Rock Police Department and Colorado State Patrol.
