Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk signs with Liverpool for record transfer fee

Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has fuelled transfer speculation after liking a tweet that claims the club have agreed a fee with Southampton for the transfer of highly sought after centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

However, Liverpool's interest in the summer prompted a transfer request from the player which saw him forced to train alone by manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

"Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football!"

The arrival of van Dijk is a huge step towards finally rectifying that and the fact that City and United were said to be interested is another win for Klopp.

In a statement van Dijk said he was "delighted and honored" to sign for Liverpool, accepted he had had a "difficult last few months" at Southampton.

An official announcement from both clubs has been made with the deal to be concluded on January 1.

Orioles' Britton out 4 months with ruptured Achilles
Those two premium talents alone could bring in packages that give Baltimore a massive head start towards rebuilding the franchise. Without Britton, they could use another left-hander besides Richard Bleier and Donnie Hart, who had a challenging 2017.

'That is what Van Dijk has to do, take Liverpool to trophies and be Liverpool's No 1 centre-back for the next decade or so'.

It ends a long chase for the side now lying fourth in the Premier League.

City will have to make way and let Liverpool meet the demands of the Saints who want a record £70m-plus fee for the player.

Liverpool had expressed an interest in the player last summer and were ready to offer 60 million pounds (80.40 million US dollars).

The player only signed a new six-year contract last year, having joined the Saints from Celtic for £13m in September 2015.

While there is no doubting the quality of the Dutch global, the size of the fee for a player who has not been performing at his very best this season may still raise a few eyebrows.
