Washington County fire destroys a home on Christmas Eve

Officials said it took 23 firefighters 20 minutes to control the flames.

At least four people were home at the time, they all made it safely with no injuries.

The fire was reported shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday at a home on Northwest Eighth Street, Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal Russell Deboodt said.

Firefighters put out the fire fairly quickly.

The fire started on the stove top where residents were cooking, he said. He said neighbors were bringing blankets for the residents to wrap themselves in and offering their houses as shelter on the cold, snowy morning.

Officials are working to get an estimate of the damages for the fire. Grand Rapids Fire Chief Don Bohn said the fire was contained to the kitchen, but there was smoke damage throughout the entire house.

Pembroke Fire, Fort Campbell Fire and Oak Grove Fire departments all responded.

A man died at an Abington apartment complex yesterday in a fire that remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross is assisting the families displaced on Christmas Day.
