The nearby Getty Center museum shut down for the day Wednesday to protect its billion-dollar art collection from smoke damage.

Winds are now blowing toward the south, southwest, which has put the Westridge-Canyonback Wilderness Park and the Brentwood neighborhood north of Sunset Boulevard on notice. The fire is burning in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles (48km) north of Los Angeles, according to KABC.

"It's a very hard moment, but we will get through this", Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Tuesday, the New York Post reported.

The fire erupted before dawn in the Sepulveda Pass, just up Interstate 405 from UCLA. The Strike team was assigned to the Creek Fire in Los Angeles County.

The fire had burned 7,000 acres and was 5% contained Wednesday morning, Medina said.
