Future of Irish border remains an obstacle in Brexit talks

This development comes ahead of May's crucial meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday where she will present the UK's final offer on the three main issues in the first round of Brexit talks - the Irish border, citizens' rights and the financial settlement, the Guardian reported.

At around midday, the pound hit a day's high of 1.3523 against the dollar after news emerged that Westminster will concede on European Union trade rules for Northern Ireland.

Irish state broadcaster RTE said that a draft text would commit Britain to "continued regulatory alignment" with the European Union to avoid divergence on the two sides of the Irish border.

May, her Brexit minister David Davis and the prime minister's Brexit adviser Olly Robbins, will meet with EU Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, EU negotiator Michel Barnier and Junkcer's chief of staff, Martin Selmayr, for lunch.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is due to speak later today about "phase one" of the Brexit talks.

It appeared that the DUP's refusal to accept compromise language on the future of Irish border, under which the United Kingdom would commit to "continued regulatory alignment" to ensure a hard border would not return, was a hurdle too far.

The British government says that when it leaves the EU in March 2019, it will also leave the single market and the customs union.

Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic is relishing a World Cup showdown with Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano. At the event, Nigeria were drawn in Group D with two-time former World Cup winners Argentina , Croatia , and Iceland .

Ms Foster had issued a statement warning it would not accept "any form of regulatory divergence which separates Northern Ireland economically or politically from the rest of the UK".

Mr Juncker insisted that a deal could still be reached this week, having described Mrs May as a "tough negotiator".

In London, May's spokesman said: "Progress is being made".

"Crucially it is clear that we want to move forward together, but on a couple of issues, differences do remain, which require further negotiation and consultation", said May before heading to meet President of the European Council Donald Tusk nearly one-hour late than scheduled.

He added: "The indications we have is that we are in a much better place now than we have been in the negotiations to date".

Varadkar said he was "surprised and disappointed that the British government now appears not to be in a position to conclude what was agreed earlier today".

The EU has demanded "sufficient progress" on key withdrawal issues - the UK's exit payment, citizens' rights and Irish border - before the second phase can start.
