Syria: Israeli missiles hit military base near Damascas

Israeli missiles struck a military position near the Syrian capital of Damascus overnight, but Syria's air defense thwarted them, the country's state television reported on Saturday.

Two missiles were intercepted, according to the Syrian State TV, but the base suffered material damages, he extent of which is still not clear.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly warned that Israel will not allow Iran to establish a military presence near its borders.

However, other sources allege that strikes were aimed at an Iranian military said to be located near Kiswah.

Sources told Al Jazeera that the Israeli raid was aimed at government military sites and positions of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement and that the sound of large explosions caused by the raid was heard in Damascus and its surroundings.
