Temperatures in downtown Los Angeles reached 91 degrees on Thursday, making this year's Thanksgiving holiday the hottest since official record keeping began in 1877.

According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, this was a record setting day for November 23 as well as for Thanksgiving Day, a holiday falling on different days each year.

Temperatures were ranging about 20 degrees above normal Wednesday, and heat records had already fallen in several locations by noon.

On Wednesday, many parts of the region broke records for the day, including downtown L.A.at 92 degrees, LAX at 92, Long Beach at 96, UCLA at 95, Woodland Hills at 93 and Oxnard at 97.

Temperatures soared into the 90s from Los Angeles to San Diego and up the Central Coast to the Bay Area on Wednesday, while much of the rest of the state basked in unseasonably balmy weather.

Monday's forecast high is 70 degrees with breezy winds.

The unusual temperatures are the result of high pressure aloft combined with weak but warm offshore winds, Thompson said.

Friday and Saturday should both see highs of 78 degrees, the weather service said.
