Tesla unveils 'the quickest auto in the world'

Electric auto firm Tesla has unveiled an electric lorry - along with a new sports vehicle that boss Elon Musk says will be the "fastest production vehicle ever made".

The company also surprised with the unveiling of a new version of its Roadster, which can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds.

And in case the semi truck wasn't enough to grab your interest, Musk also ended the presentation with the debut of the new Roadster.

The Tesla Semi checks a lot of boxes in terms of addressing bottom line considerations, offering 500 miles of range to avoid too much compromise vs. diesel truck travel capability, and providing a way for a company to decrease its net Carbon dioxide emissions without having to undertake expensive endeavors like sponsoring the construction of renewable power plants.

In his presentation, Musk said the cost of operating an electric tractor-trailer would be $1.26 per mile, compared with $1.51 per mile in a diesel truck.

Tesla this evening unveiled their Semi electric truck, which is "the safest, most comfortable truck ever", equipped with four independent motors.

The Roadster is scheduled to go into production in 2020, and the Semi should become available in 2019, Musk said.

Not related to the semi news, the analyst lessens his 2018 EPS expectations from ($0.89) to ($1.25) due to delayed Model 3 margin leverage along with corporate expenses while maintaining his forecast looking for a 95% year-over-year surge in revenue to $23 billion.

The PayPal founder - who also owns private rocket company SpaceX - announced the two new vehicles at a swanky launch party at his headquarters in Los Angeles yesterday.

These are just the base specs.

The Model 3 is expected to go into production in 2018, electric trucks in 2019.

Hirsch agrees. "The Tesla Semi is not for long haul trucking." he said.

And J.B. Hunt Transport Services, a top logistics and trucking company, said Friday it had made a reservation to buy "multiple" Tesla Semis. And if three streamlined Semis are platooned as a close-following convoy, the cost per mile would go down to 85 cents, Musk said. Tesla is working on a pickup truck and a lower-cost SUV and negotiating a new factory in China.

Mr Osborne said Tesla's cumulative capex announcements now exceed $15 billion to $20 billion over the next few years.

Tesla sold just 222 Model 3s from July through September. Though the vehicle is clearly priced in supercar territory, it's far cheaper than numerous supercars it outperforms. Regulations require commercial trucks to be sidelined if their windshields are cracked in a way that could affect the driver's view.

There's been a lot of speculation about the semi truck concept - including if the semi truck market is even a good fit for the company.
