Powerful natural disaster rocks Iran-Iraq border; several villages damaged, casualties reported

A magnitude 7.4 natural disaster hit an area at the Iranian-Iraqi border on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported.

Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akda─č said no destruction or damage occurred in Turkey from magnitude the quake.

Iranian state television said the quake was felt in numerous cities in the country and had damaged eight villages, including knocking out electricity in many of them.

Initial reports said a number of villages have been damaged and a number of people have lost their lives in western town of Qasr-e Shirin.

The quake's epicentre was in Penjwin in the north-western Sulaimaniyah province within the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region very close to the Iranian border, according to an Iraqi meteorology official.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck 15.5 miles beneath the surface about 20 miles from Halabjah, Iraq.

Shocks were felt in Iran, Pakistan, Lebanon, Kuwait and Turkey, news agencies in those countries reported.

Iran sits on many major fault lines and is prone to near-daily quakes.

Residents were keeping away from their homes and sleeping on the streets, several hours after the quake hit.
