Disneyland shuts down water coolers following DEADLY disease outbreak

The towers are in a backstage area near the New Orleans Square Train Station, a Disneyland Resort spokesperson said.

Orange County has had more than 55 reported cases of Legionnaires' disease this year and the number of cases has increased in recent years both in the county and nationally, according to the health care agency.

The 12 patients are between ages 52 and 94, and 10 were hospitalized, she said.

There has been one death - the person had not visited the theme park. "We conducted a review and learned that two cooling towers had elevated levels of Legionella bacteria".

According to a LA Times report, Disney reported on November 3 that routine testing had detected elevated levels of Legionella in two cooling towers a month earlier, and the towers had been disinfected. The towers were taken out of service November 1, disinfected, went back in operation on November 5 but were shut down again Tuesday and will remain offline until tests confirm they are free from contamination, according to the park and the county health agency.

The disease has similar symptoms to pneumonia, including high fever, chills, and cough. Those towers were chemically treated and shut down to eliminate further infection.

Health officials are investigating 12 cases of Legionnaires' disease traced to Anaheim, California, including nine cases among visitors to Disneyland in September.

. "They have indicated there is no longer any known risk associated with our facilities".

The outbreak was traced to the convention hotel's air conditioning system, and Legionnaire's disease has since been sourced to contaminated water or mist.

This type of excessive lung infection is caused by inhaling the bacteria and not spread by person-to-person contact.

Disney took the towers out of service again on Tuesday.

The disease can be treated with antibiotics. It typically strikes the elderly and people with compromised immune systems, and can be fatal, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Health officials subsequently issued an order that the towers remain shut down until they are verified to be free from contamination.
