Feinstein: Sessions needs to clarify remarks about Russian interactions

The House Intelligence Committee on Monday night released the full, unclassified transcript that former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page's provided in closed-door testimony last week.

During more than six hours of closed-door testimony, Page said that he informed Sessions about his coming July 2016 trip to Russian Federation, which Page told CNN was unconnected to his campaign role.

In a statement, House intel committee ranking Democrat Adam Schiff (D-CA) said Page was "forced to acknowledge" he communicated with high ranking Russian officials, despite previously casting the Russia investigation as a "witch hunt". Dianne Feinstein said Sunday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions should come before the Senate again to clear up his statements about Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Asked about the email, Page told lawmakers he did not mean that he had met with officials, but rather had learned of their views in local media, from scholars in Russian Federation and at a public speech given by Dvorkovich at a conference where Page was also speaking.Page said he had a "brief hello" with Dvorkovich.

According to the documents, George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign adviser, said at a March 31, 2016, meeting of Trump foreign policy advisers "that he had connections that could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President Putin".

Page also wrote that he had been provided "incredible insights and outreach" by Russian lawmakers and "senior members" of Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration during the trip.

Page's testimony also revealed that more campaign staff members were aware of his July 2016 trip to Russian Federation than had previously been disclosed, including Jeff Sessions, who is now the attorney general.

After first asserting that he didn't meet with senior Russian officials during the trip, he later acknowledged that he spoke with deputy prime minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

Page also told committee members that he told Jeff Sessions, who was then a US senator and is now attorney general, and Sam Clovis, then the national co-chairman of Trump's campaign, that he was traveling to Moscow to make a speech at the New Economic School. He maintained that his interaction with Dvorkovich consisted of a brief greeting, and that he had learned his views on the campaign while listening to Dvorkovich's public address.

Sessions appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee during the former Alabama senator's confirmation hearing for attorney general.

"I did not, and I'm not aware of anyone else that did, and I don't believe it happened", Sessions said in response to questions from Sen.

He said he was unaware at the time that Papadopoulos was making similar proposals for Trump to travel to Russian Federation, though he acknowledged he had received some of Papadopoulos' emails about Russian Federation.

But Sessions shot the idea down, Gordon said.

All 10 committee Democrats signed a letter asking Sessions about questions on Russian ties to Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
