Iran adds missile to annual anti-US pageant

Iran on Saturday displayed a surface-to-surface missile as part of events marking the anniversary of the 1979 U.S. embassy takeover and hostage crisis.

"And when a missile is tested thousands of kilometers away, after (issuing empty) threats, all their president does is put out a tweet", he said in an apparent reference to North Korea's missile tests.

Demonstrators held anti-U.S. and anti-Israel signs and chanted slogans, including "Down With the United States", condemning Washington's policies toward Iran.

Hundreds of Iranian militant students stormed the American embassy following the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Tensions reached a boiling point, after president Trump refused to certify the Islamic Republic's compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal in mid-October. They also burned flags of the US and Israel, as well as an effigy of Trump. Under that deal, most worldwide sanctions on Iran were lifted in exchange for Tehran curbing nuclear activity. He called the USA the "eternal enemy" of Iran. In a potential violation of the JCPOA's terms, Trump encouraged nations to cut economic ties with Iran because of its support for groups deemed terrorist organizations by the USA government. The U.S. cut its diplomatic relations with Iran after the embassy takeover and has had no diplomatic relations since.

Iran's commemorations took place under tight security managed by Iranian police and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the country's Supreme National Security Council, addressed the crowd on Saturday, saying Iran will make any sanctions imposed by the U.S. "ineffective", even as Washington targets Iran's economic, nuclear and defensive power.

Iranians who gathered at the embassy echoed the defiant words of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who last week called the United States Iran's "No. 1 enemy".

Anti-Iran measures adopted by the U.S. have strengthened the Iranian nation's power, Shamkhani said on Saturday.

Celebrations were held across the country and reports emerged of thousands gathering outside the U.S. embassy in Tehran.

"Instead of confronting Iran directly, the United States should pursue a different strategy-one predicated on sticking to the JCPOA and engaging with Iran and other regional players on the broader set of security challenges in the Middle East", he said.
