Later on, the militants also carried out an attack on units of the army and pro-government militants in the area.

The IDF statement was issued in the wake of heavy fighting in Khader on Friday morning.

IDF forces brought them back into Israel.

The majority-Druze village, which lies near the disengagement line that divides the Syrian-controlled part of the Golan from that occupied by Israel, was targeted early in the morning by a suicide vehicle bomb that killed nine.

"The IDF is ready and prepared to assist the residents of the village, and will prevent the harming or the conquering of the village of Hadher our of deep commitment to the Druze population".

Israeli troops are ready to protect the Syrian Druze town of Khader from opposition rebels, Haaretz reported on Friday.

"In recent hours we witness the intensifying of the fighting at the area of the Druze village of Hadher in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights", he said.

There are an estimated 20,000 Druze living under the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights which was captured from Syria in the 1967 Six Day war and was de facto annexed by Israel in the early 80s.

Taking the lead at the turn it looked as though it would be another comfortable win for the Chris Waller-trained fan favourite. But trying to compare one horse to another, they're all different.

Violence by Islamist rebels against Syria's Druze minority has been controversial within Israel, which has its own Druze minority, and this appears to have convinced Israel to change its position, at least in this one village's case.

The Israeli army sealed off the area to prevent anyone crossing.

The PA ministry's statement reflects the opinion of the Syrian government, which accuses Israel of supporting terrorist groups in Syria.

Israel's Druze, some of whom have reached the senior echelons of the Israeli military and government, have been calling for help on behalf of their brethren in Syria, both at home and overseas.

Israel has declared the Golan Heights to be a closed military zone in order to undermine any infiltration from the Druze neighbourhoods on the Syrian side of the border. In a statement, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that "we are constantly watching our borders, both north and south, in order to ensure security".

The Israeli military, which has been launching airstrikes against Syria, could be preparing to cross into its territory now.

The Wall Street Journal said in the same month that Israel had been providing Takfiri terrorists in Syria's Golan Heights with a steady flow of funds and medical supplies.
