SA Court Sentences 2 Farmers Who Forced Black Man into Coffin

Two white farmers who forced an unemployed black man into a coffin and threatened to kill him have been jailed following a trial that has reignited debate about the legacy of apartheid in South Africa.

In August, the pair were found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm‚ attempted murder‚ intimidation and kidnapping.

It is vile that two white men chose to take the law into their own hands and teach a man who is vulnerable to their power a lesson for common theft.

Oosthuizen was handed 11 years for his role as an accessory to the crime whiles Jackson bagged 14 years as the main culprit.

"The conclusion of this grotesque case sends a clear - and welcome - message that acts of racism or discrimination will not be tolerated in South Africa", said Shenilla Mohamed, executive director of Amnesty International South Africa.

Yesterday the victim Mr Mlotshwa appeared before Judge Mphahlele and said he thought the farmers should be jailed for 15 years and he said he thought he was due compensation for his ordeal of R400,000 (£22,750).

While delivering the verdict, Judge Segopotje Mphahlele said the accused have been convicted of serious offences and made reference to the use of the K-word during the assault.

She said their behaviour raised and fuelled racial tension.

In the footage, which was widely circulated on social media, they threatened to burn Mr Mlotshwa alive and asked him how he wanted to die "quickly or slowly".

The white man persuaded the black man to climb into the coffin.

Jackson and Oosthuizen were arrested late previous year after a video showing them shoving Mlotshwa into a coffin went viral on social and other media platforms.

They were also caught on video of threatening to throw a snake in the coffin with their terrified prisoner.
