SIT release sketches of two main suspects in journalist Gauri Lankesh murder

The Karnataka Police SIT investigating the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh (55) has made a decision to release portraits of two suspects who allegedly shot the journalist and a video clip of one of the suspects conducting a recce ahead of the murder. Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy had said a few times that the SIT has some clues, but Singh, who took multiple questions on Saturday indicated that there may be nothing.

"We have prepared these sketches with the help of separate eyewitness accounts and our technical inputs. They (suspects) have probably surveyed for a month to identify all the CCTV locations and use a path where there were no CCTVs", said an officer who is part of the SIT, requesting anonymity. The sketches were prepared on the basis of eyewitness accounts who sad they saw that the suspects were seen in the area almost seven days prior to the crime.

The SIT released two CCTV footages from the date of crime i.e., September 5, 2017. The SIT has confirmed as Bangalore Mirror reported last week that the assailants stayed in Bangalore for over a week and also conducted multiple recce of Gauri's residence.

The investigating team has identified the make and the model of the bike that the killers used. "Both the suspects are 25-35 years of age", he said.

He said, "Can't ascertain religion of suspects by external appearances like tilak or earrings as it could be done to mislead".

The family had said investigators should look into all angles behind her killing, whether it is right wing extremists or Naxalites, as reports had emerged about a possible Naxal link.

SIT also released a video footage of a bike rider wearing a full-masked helmet on a red-wine and black coloured motorcycle. "That information (Sanathan Sanstha) is only in the media, from our side there is no information of any organisation till now", said BK Singh, Police SIT. "All other angles, including personal are still open".

Rudra Patil, Sarang Akolkar and Vinay Pawar were also probed in connection with the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and Kannada scholar and researcher MM Kalburgi. "Even her life as an activist, for that matter", Singh said.

The police didn't confirm if the weapons used in murder of writer M.M. Kalburgi and Lankesh were similar.
