Mattis: Report that Trump Wanted Tenfold Nuclear Increase 'Absolutely False' and 'Irresponsible'

President Donald Trump's insults, threats and challenges to journalists have led to questions of whether the Commander-in-Chief respects the First Amendment.

Trump decried the story as fake, but Tillerson declined to explicitly reject the claim.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Oct 11) denied a report from NBC News that he told his national security advisers in July he wanted to increase the country's nuclear arsenal by almost tenfold, saying he argued for its modernisation.

NBC's story was based on information from three anonymous officials the broadcaster said were in the room at the meeting of US national security leaders.

"Don't conflate 'revocation, ' which is taking away a license mid-term, with renewal, which is when a challenge could be filed", Georgetown Law lecturer Andrew Schwartzman, an attorney who specializes in media and telecommunications policy, told Ars today. On some days, the majority of the tweets fluttering from the Oval Office focus on the press.

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet said Trump was continuing "his effort to undermine the First Amendment and freedom of the press".

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump tweeted other jabs at NBC.

Trump has voiced inconsistent opinions on the nuclear arsenal, at one point expressing a desire to "greatly strengthen and expand [US] nuclear capability" and in other instances insisting he does not think the arsenal should grow in size. "And you have a responsibility to tell the truth, to be accurate".

Trump was discussing a report by NBC News, saying it was fake.

"Trump indicated he wanted a bigger stockpile, not the bottom position on that downward-sloping curve", NBC News reported, adding that those present were surprised by the request.

As Politico points out, the FCC licenses individual stations not networks though NBC's parent company, Comcast, does own a number of stations. Pure fiction, made up to demean.

"People should look into it". "I mean, I've seen tremendously dishonest press". Trump could try to pressure the FCC to take action, but the process is convoluted and FCC Chairman Ajit Pai hasn't publicly signaled any willingness to help the president fight his various battles against news organizations.

The news comes at a time when Trump is expected within days to declare that Iran is not fulfilling its obligations under a 2015 anti-nuclear-proliferation deal it made with the Obama administration.

Still, President Trump responded with fury.
