Russian opponent Alexei Navalny sentenced to 20 days in prison

The lawyer and anti-corruption campaigner, 41, has said he will run in presidential elections in March when Vladimir Putin is expected to seek a fourth term.

The severe tension in bilateral ties stems in part from allegations that Putin violated that very principle: In January, the USA intelligence community said it found that Putin ordered an "influence campaign" targeting the 2016 presidential election in the United States.

His 20-day jail term means he will miss a campaign rally planned in President Vladimir Putin's hometown of St Petersburg on October 7 - the Russian leader's birthday.

Last Friday, Navalny was detained at his apartment in Moscow and questioned by police. Alexei Navalny had already served a prison sentence of twenty-five days this summer for same reason.

'SNL' hammers President Trump over Puerto Rico response
Last night, Cruz wore a "Help Us We Are Dying " shirt while being was interviewed by Cooper. "It is unspeakable. Eleven days after Hurricane Maria hit, Puerto Rico still looks like a war zone.

The Kremlin said on Tuesday it hoped that President Donald Trump's new ambassador to Russia, Jon Huntsman, could help breathe new life into battered U.S. -Russia relations. He had been due to attend a major rally in Mr Putin's home city of St Petersburg on Saturday.

Navalny is planning to hold rallies across Russia's 11 time zones, from Arkhangelsk in the north to Vladivostok in the Far East, while Navalny's supporters are planning to move forward with the rally on Saturday, and use the rally as a platform to protest the court ruling.

A Russian law on public gatherings, which was hastily adopted following massive anti-government rallies in 2011-2012, carries 30 days in jail for repeated violations. The rally, part of Navalny's campaign tour of Russian Federation, was scheduled for Saturday, October 7, Putin's 64th birthday. It was widely seen as a politically ordered judgment.
