Exclusive Interview: Uber Boss Responds To Ban And Petition

While we haven't been asked to make any changes, we would like to know what we can do. "But that requires a dialogue we sadly haven't been able to have recently".

The petition - launched by Uber on Friday after it had its licence stripped by Transport for London (TfL) - was started by Tom Elvidge, Uber's general manager in London, and will be delivered to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

Among the issues cited by TfL are Uber's approach to reporting serious criminal offenses and its use of "greyball" technology, which can be used to block regulators from fully accessing the app.

The operator of the transport system of the capital of the UK Transport for London refused to renew the license of the company Uber after September 30, the expiration date of the current license.

Mr Khosrowshahi, who replaced Travis Kalanick as the Uber chief last month, sent an email to employees in which he confirmed that the company would appeal the Transport for London (TfL) ban.

London deemed Uber unfit to run a taxi service on Friday and stripped it of its license to operate from the end of next week in a major blow to the US firm and 3.5 million users in one of the world's wealthiest cities.

More than 600,000 people have signed a petition calling for the decision not to grant a new licence to be reversed.

After Trump speech, Mattis says North Korea crisis still 'diplomatic effort'
Mr Mattis also said diplomacy and sanctions were working and putting pressure on Pyongyang. South Korea has raised the possibility of reintroducing nuclear weapons to the peninsula.

More than half a million people signed an online petition in less than 24 hours by Saturday afternoon backing Uber's fight to save its auto operations in London, mirroring profound economic and political disagreements in Britain.

Uber has 40,000 drivers working in the capital, and a spokesman for Uber said around 20,000 Uber drivers had emailed the city's mayor directly to object to the decision.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi pleaded with TfL to "work with us to make things right", rather than banning the app.

Mr McDonnell showed no sympathy for the United States firm and revealed that he had never travelled in an Uber cab.

While the petition doesn't trigger any legal or regulatory process, the San Francisco-based company has a history of successfully using petitions and loyalty of the public to pressure city governments. Uber faces allegations of sexual assaults on passengers by its drivers.

While Uber doesn't have that much of a choice if it wants to return to such an important market (TfL has the upper hand here), it's notable that Uber is changing its tone more quickly than it has in the past. If the decision is upheld in court, it will have to stop operating in London.

"They have a lot more scrutiny on them now", said Reed Galen, a political consultant who worked with Uber on a campaign in Austin.
