Heavy Rains in Mumbai Again Schools, Colleges shut today, flights Cancelled

Flight operations at Mumbai airport continued to be affected today after heavy rains since Tuesday, with the main runway remaining closed and adverse weather slowing operations on the secondary runway.

Mumbai and the adjoining areas braced for another spell of heavy rains on Wednesday morning, a day after incessant rainfall, coupled with thunder and lightning, forced the normal life out of gear, affecting rail, road and air traffic.

Flight operations were suspended until Wednesday morning as a result of the downpour.Maharashtra State Education Minister Vinod Tawde announced that all schools in the city would remain shut. "There will be no Dabba deliveries by Mumbai Dabbawalas due to rains" said Subhash Talekar, Mumbai Dabbawala Association spokesperson.

The met department said Mumbai city had got 210 mm rainfall, the suburbs had got 303 mm, and Dahanu near Mumbai had got 304 mm rainfall.

"In lieu of the main runway not being available at Mumbai airport till 1830 hours on Sep 20, 2017, the following flights have been cancelled".

A similar forecast has been issued for south Konkan as well. The IMD (India Meteorological Department) has also predicted that North Madhya Maharashtra would get heavy rainfall at isolated places in the 24 hours beginning September 21.

Chopra's gown was embellished with sequins in a pattern that looked surprisingly inspired by an Indian motif. A chunky hemline at the neck and armholes gave Chopra's outfit the exact amount of attention it deserved.

Airport authorities are still trying to pull out the stuck aircraft.

Low visibility, strong winds and slippery conditions caused the SpiceJet flight to overshoot while landing on Tuesday night and skid onto the grass. The main runway was expected to remain closed till at least 2 pm today as there was no letup in the rain. The road traffic was badly affected and it was hard for commuters to reach stations and take the train for workplaces.

Due to the downpour, five long distance trains of the Western Railways have been cancelled.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police twitter account has been updating people on the traffic situation in the metropolis.

An IMD official said the Santacruz observatory recorded 225.3 mm rain from 8.30 am to 11.30 pm last night.

The dabbawallas pride themselves on the "deliver on time" motto, irrespective of Mumbai's heat or heavy rains.
