Countries begin signing nuclear ban treaty at UN

Rouhani spoke on a day when dozens of other nations began signing the first treaty to ban nuclear weapons, a pact spurned by nuclear powers.

Speaking after the ceremony, Onyeama said Nigeria signed the treaty because right from the early 60s, Nigeria has been a strong advocate for nuclear weapons' prohibition and also, non proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Supporters of the pact, however, say the time has come for the global community to push harder toward eliminating atomic weapons as a 50-year-old Non-Proliferation Treaty has effectively failed to contain the thirst of powers for expanding their nuclear arsenal.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, signed the treaty on behalf of Nigeria on Wednesday at the UN headquarters on the sidelines of the High-level UN General Assembly.

Seven decades after the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan during World War II - the only use of nuclear weapons - there are believed to be about 15,000 of them in the world today.

Toshiba to sell memory business for $18 billion
All because of the legal action launched by Toshiba's scorned JV partner in the chipmaking business, U.S. group Western Digital . The company needs the cash to plug a giant hole in its finances from its bankrupt US nuclear unit Westinghouse Electric Corp.

The Treaty - adopted on 7 July this year at a United Nations conference in NY by a vote of 122 in favour to one against (Netherlands), with one abstention (Singapore) - prohibits a full range of nuclear-weapon-related activities, such as undertaking to develop, test, produce, manufacture, acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices, as well as the use or threat of use of these weapons. She said that with tensions growing between the US and North Korea over the North's nuclear program, the need for the treaty is even greater.

He added that countries needed to trust each other when they say that they have destroyed all their nuclear weapons.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian reiterated his country's position Monday, describing the treaty as "wishful thinking" that is "close to irresponsible".

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, otherwise known as the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty, is the first legally-binding worldwide agreement that would comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons, with the utmost aim of leading towards the whole elimination of nuclear weapons.

"We call upon them to join this date with history", said Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis-the leader of a country without a standing army. The draft resolution also underscores the need to enhance the overall effectiveness of peacekeeping operations and "the critical importance of improving accountability, transparency, efficiency and effectiveness".
