Suu Kyi vows to repatriate some Rohingya refugees

I only know about the Rakhine issue as a religious and race conflict. Denied citizenship, they are effectively stateless.

The Indian government said it has evidence that there are extremists who pose a threat to the country's security among the Rohingya Muslims who have fled Burma and settled in many Indian cities.

Speaking Tuesday in New York, May said "this military action needs to stop".

"Aung San Suu Kyi today demonstrated that she and her government are still burying their heads in the sand over the horrors unfolding in Rakhine state", Amnesty International regional director James Gomez said. She is accused of "fail (ing) to live up to the reputation" she acquired during her time as a human rights activist.

The claims emerged during a petition hearing at India's supreme court filed on behalf of two Rohingya refugees challenging a government decision to deport the ethnic group from India.

Using "Bengali", a Burmese ethnic slur for Rohingya, he stated in a Facebook post that, "They have demanded recognition as Rohingya, which has never been an ethnic group in Myanmar".

She has invited diplomats to visit troubled areas in Rakhine State, from where more than 400,000 Muslim Rohingyas have fled violence.

Earlier this month, the Myanmar government had said 176 out of 471, or 37.4% of all Rohingya villages were empty of people, and an additional 34 villages were "partially abandoned".

She claimed there had been no "clearance operations" since 5 September and "more than half" of Rohingya villages remained intact.

Hurricane Jose twists in Atlantic
Jose will track between Bermuda and the east coast of the United States into next week, generating risky seas in the process. Jose is a Category 1 storm in the Atlantic generating 75 miles per hour sustained winds, barely hurricane strength.

"It is sad that in meeting our diplomatic community I am obliged to focus on a very few of our problems when there are so many which I think we can resolve together", Suu Kyi said in English, aiming her half-hour address at foreign diplomats and fellow Nobel laureates who have grown increasingly dismayed by the violence and her refusal to speak out in favor of the Rohingya.

Nyan Win, a central executive committee of the ruling National League for Democracy party, said as there are thousands of refugees in Bangladesh they need documents of their refugee status from Myanmar to accept them.

By downplaying the Rohingyas' plight, Suu Kyi dashed hopes that she would use her moral authority and tremendous popularity at home to push for an end to an army campaign that seems created to drive the Rohingya out of the country for good.

According to the report, movement restrictions have a wide range of detrimental effects, including reduced access to education, health and services, strengthened communal segregation, and reduced economic interaction.

Burma has rejected allegations of ethnic cleansing, claiming its security forces were carrying out clearance operations to defend against the insurgents of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, which claimed responsibility for the August attacks and similar, smaller raids in October past year.

New maps of the damage show near-total destruction of the 214 villages seen in satellite imagery analyzed by HRW, with more than 90 percent of the structures in each village damaged.

Rohingya Muslims have faced persecution in Myanmar for decades, but attacks by Rohingya insurgents on Myanmar security forces on August 25 sparked the fresh violence against the minority group.

"After several months of seeming quiet and peace, 30 police outputs were attacked by armed Muslim groups".
