CA Fwd statement on passage of legislative housing

In a last minute vote early on Saturday, California's legislature voted to approve a bill that would limit police cooperation with federal immigration authorities, according to multiple reports.

This year, California lawmakers have strengthened protections for undocumented immigrants, increased the gasoline tax and extended a program aimed at compelling businesses to reduce air pollution, all in opposition to federal policies.

The California Values Act would not necessarily make California the country's first "sanctuary state". But, the state attorney general's office would be required to draft recommendations to limit immigration officials' ability to access personal information, and the office also would be tasked with ensuring that SB54 is enforced.

Police and sheriff's officials, including jail officers, will still be able to work with federal immigration authorities if a person has been convicted of one of some 800 crimes, mostly felonies and misdemeanors that can be charged as felonies.

Gov. Jerry Brown, who negotiated a watered-down final version of the bill, is expected to sign it into law.

"This comes as a relief that there are some legislators that are really listening", Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, told CBS.

10 militants dead, nine Egyptian policemen wounded in Cairo shootout
Monday's attack the deadliest against Egyptian security forces since July when ISIL killed 23 troops in Rafah . In March, the military said militants killed 10 soldiers during an army raid in Sinai's central region.

"Now, more than ever, it is imperative that California law clearly distinguish state and local law enforcement officers from federal deportation agents", said Pasquarella.

Kevin De León, D-Los Angeles, said his legislation doesn't detract from the ultimate goal of local law enforcement in the state: keeping Californians safe.

This year's legislation not only raises new, much-needed revenue for housing, it reasserts the state's interest in getting more housing built while preserving the say local communities have in their own neighborhoods.

California's three investor-owned utilities, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric, said the bill does not protect customers from the cost of switching from fossil fuels. The compromise helped shift the Police Chiefs Association's stance to "neutral".

Among the passages cleared: San Francisco Sen.

The bills are nearly identical, both would ban smoking at parks and beaches within the states, but there are a couple differences that make A.B.
