The identity of the man is not immediately available. "The U.S. citizen is being legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant". The Daily Beast has earlier reported that according to a source, the American was captured by Kurdish forces.

In a statement released through CNN, US Marine Corps Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway revealed that the Kurdish troops that are being backed up by the US military surrendered an American citizen who is fighting for the worldwide terrorist group on or before Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The report was also confirmed to CNN by an unnamed USA military official. Earl Brown, told the Daily Beast.

In the statement, the command said foreign fighters who are captured or surrender to SDF partners in Syria will be safeguarded and transported humanely.

Although they do monitor any attempts to support the terrorist groups of the Islamic State or al-Qaeda.

Mohamed Khweis of Virginia, who briefly joined ISIS and then defected and surrendered to the Kurds in 2016, was held for three months in Iraq and interrogated 11 times - first by a "dirty" team gathering intelligence and then by a "clean" team collecting information to be used in court, according to court documents. He later expressed regret in a television interview.
