Hurricane Jose twists in Atlantic

Hurricane Jose, a pale followup to Category 5 Irma, could churn up North Carolina's coast with tropical-force winds and risky surf by this weekend, forecasters said.

A few of the weather models has brought Jose close to our southern coast of New England and off the coast of Cape Cod by Wednesday, with gusty winds and rough seas.

Jose is a Category 1 storm in the Atlantic generating 75 miles per hour sustained winds, barely hurricane strength.

Tropical storm-force winds from Jose spread over the islands on Saturday.

Jose will track between Bermuda and the east coast of the United States into next week, generating risky seas in the process. In fact, I probably won't be confident on Jose's track until Friday or maybe even the weekend. Last week, Jose did top out at a category 4 storm but is much weaker now.

The forecast after that is less certain, with some models suggesting the storm will loop toward the north and northeast and other models having it move west toward the Bahamas.

Jose's unusual spin is because of weak steering currents that are letting it be jostled around by a large deep-layer trough to the northeast.

WeatherBell has been very accurate with hurricane forecasts and they do strengthen Jose to a Category 3 storm close to the Outer Banks and a Cat 2 storm southeast of Cape Cod. In fact, we are just about smack dab in the middle of the peak of the typical hurricane season right now. Two major hurricanes, Harvey and Irma, have made landfall in the United States already this season.
