Hurricane Irma Causes Airline Issues in the Caribbean and South Florida

Hurricane Irma wasn't the only vortex that the southeastern USA had to worry about Sunday.

Up and down the wide, sandy beaches of Pinellas County are traditional "old Florida" waterfront hotels such as the Don Cesar, a coral pink 1920s hotel on St. Pete Beach, which was closed by the storm.

Warnings of risky storm surges remained in effect through vast swaths of peninsular Florida, where more than six million people had been ordered to flee Irma in one of the biggest evacuations in U.S. history. This is the longest any cyclone has maintained that intensity on record, according to Phil Klotzbach, an atmospheric scientist at Colorado State University.

Hurricane Irma's path of destruction up Florida's Gulf Coast on Sunday threatens to disrupt a thriving state tourism industry worth more than $100 billion annually just months ahead of the busy winter travel season.

Kahn also said a man staying at the shelter died of natural causes.

Six deaths in Florida have been blamed on Irma, which first hit the state Sunday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane.

The South Carolina Captive Insurance Association has postponed its conference scheduled for this week to December due to Hurricane Irma, which approached the state Monday as a tropical storm.

Around midday, Irma also spread misery into Georgia and SC as it moved inland with winds at 50 miles per hour.

Hurricane Irma pounds Southwest Florida with 110 miles per hour winds
Right now the ferocious storm is drawing the ocean away from the coast and feeding the storm surge into other areas. The hurricane weakened to a tropical storm Monday morning as it moved north towards Georgia.

Irma's center was about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of the heavily populated Tampa-St.

Irma has weakened to a tropical depression, and heavy rainfall is continuing across the southeastern USA, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Irma gave Florida a coast-to-coast pummeling with winds up to 130 miles per hour Sunday, swamping homes and boats, knocking out power to millions and toppling massive construction cranes over the Miami skyline.

In Miami-Dade, Irma's fierce winds bent a construction crane in half, tore a roof off a gas station and left streets throughout the county littered with felled trees and palm fronds.

Another hurricane, Jose, strengthened to an "extremely risky category 4" storm, the National Hurricane Center said on Friday.

Meteorologist Steve Hamilton said flash flooding could become a problem as the storm moved north and heavy rains fell on mountainous area, and that the extreme conditions would continue for a few more days. "We've got to work hard to get them their power back". An update from Monroe County describes "an astounding recovery effort" taking place in the Florida Keys, where there was no water, power or cellphone service after the storm.

"We did everything possible we needed to make sure that nothing was going to put us in any physical danger", weather Juston Drake said Monday. "Stay safe, be prepared, listen to local evacuation advisories". Many have to rely on food they stored before the hurricane's arrival. "Preparation for this storm will not detract from World Vision's continued response to Hurricane Harvey", the children's charity said.
