Air Berlin cancels flights after pilots call in sick

"It is essential that operations be stable in order for these negotiations to go well", Winkelmann said.

A decision on the fate of Air Berlin could come as quickly as September 21, three days before the German national election.

The ailing carrier was forced to cancel more than 100 flights after the wildcat strike, including trans- Atlantic connections, causing chaos at several German airports.

A spokesman for Eurowings, which leases 33 crewed planes from Air Berlin, said it also expected short-haul flight cancellations as a result of the sickness-related absences.

About 150 pilots called in sick today, Air Berlin said.

Both domestic and worldwide flights were affected, including links between Berlin and Los Angeles or Dubai.

Ukraine is Investigating Mikheil Saakashvili for Illegal Entry Into the Country
Government officials at the border said 17 police and guards were injured during the confrontation with Saakashvili's supporters. Kiev justified the move by claiming that Saakashvili had provided "inaccurate information" in his citizenship application.

The carrier said Monday it will cancel numerous routes to the Caribbean and some U.S. flights from September 25, and only customers who bought tickets after the company filed for insolvency on August 15 will be reimbursed. But a loan from the German government is keeping the carrier afloat while attempts are made to sell off parts of the airline.

The local newspaper cited a letter of intent sent by Pang's company LinkGlobal to Air Berlin's management dated on August 31.

Former Formula One driver Niki Lauda is also interested in buying back Niki, the Austrian airline he founded, which merged with Air Berlin six years ago.

The Gulf-based company said last month the decline of Air Berlin was "extremely disappointing", especially as it had provided extensive support to the German carrier over the past six years, notably with a €250m (£227m) cash injection in April this year.

Ryanair said on Tuesday that Air Berlin could be of interest to the Irish low-priced carrier but it didn't want to wait until after Lufthansa had finished talks.
