Volkswagen plans to electrify 300-car portfolio by 2030

Volkswagen has stepped up its shift toward the electric auto and is planning to invest over €20 billion or $24 billion in the zero-emission vehicles by 2030 as it tries to challenge the pioneer in the industry Tesla in creating mass market vehicles.

The German auto maker recently said that it will release electric versions of all of its models by 2030, and that it plans to release 80 new electric vehicles by 2025.

Several parts of the world, including the United Kingdom and France, have announced that they plan on outright banning the sale of new diesel and petrol cars in the future, putting pressure on automakers to adjust their business strategy and commit to improvements in consumption and emissions.

The I.D. CROZZ gets one electric motor at the front axle and one at the rear, and torque distribution is controlled via an "electric propshaft". Volkswagen are still exploring different way to meet their target but it has been suggested that about a quarter of all of the new vehicles manufactured by the group could be fully-electric.

The German carmaker said it will invest over €20bn by 2030 in the electric-car efforts.

Earlier in August, Volkswagen had announced that it will build an electric version of its Microbus, which will be launched in the market by 2022.

Adding urgency to the push for electric cars, China over the weekend became the latest country to announce intentions to phase-out fossil-fuel powered vehicles, following the lead of the United Kingdom and France, which have outlined bans on combustion-engine models by 2040. New offerings of SUV or SUV-like body stylings on compact vehicle platforms include: Volkswagen's T-Roc, the SEAT Arona, Jaguars E-Pace, Kia Stonic, Citroen C3 Aircross, Skoda Karoq, and a so-far unnamed offering from Chery. Daimler will show off a fully electric, compact vehicle under its EQ brand, which represents the company's push into areas it has bundled under the acronym CASE: connected, autonomous, shared and services, and electric.

Volkswagen's decision to embrace electric vehicles is a significant one, not least because of the diesel emissions scandal that rocked the company in 2015.

"We want to reach the maximum speed ourselves, we don't need quotas for that", he told Reuters.

The company said that depending on market developments it could sell 3 million battery-only vehicles a year in 2025.

The company is having a go at the increasingly popular four-door coupe SUV segment with the CROZZ.

Luxury brand Audi, the group's largest earnings contributor, will start selling its first all-electric SUV in 2018 and add two more purely battery-powered vehicles in the next three years.

In addition to spending 20 billion euros, the automaker announced plans to place battery-tech orders worth more than 50 billion euros by 2025.
