Ukraine is Investigating Mikheil Saakashvili for Illegal Entry Into the Country

Ukrainian citizenship of Saakashvili was taken away by order of President Petro Poroshenko.

Mr Poroshenko vowed to punish those responsible for Mr Saakashvili's breach of the border, while observers said they feared the ugly political spat would hit Ukraine's worldwide image.

Kiev justified the move by claiming that Saakashvili had provided "inaccurate information" in his citizenship application.

The criminal case was opened on charges of "illegal smuggling of people across the state border of Ukraine", said a statement on the website of the National Police. "We should have democracy in our country and should not have the diktat of the oligarchs". Both his passports Ukrainian ad Georgian, are not valid, but Georgia's ex-president and one-time regional governor in Ukraine, "forces entry" to Ukrainian side. Saakashvili gave up his Georgian citizenship to take the job, where he rapidly began sweeping anti-corruption activities.

The return carries risks for Saakashvili, who is stateless.

"Instead, a crime was committed", he said of Sunday's events at the border. "There should be an absolutely unequivocal legal, judicial responsibility". "She tries to use this situation with the hope that this will provoke a political crisis in Ukraine and lead to early elections".

According to him, the inviolability of the state border is a constitutional principle.

European Masters: Matthew Fitzpatrick defeats Scott Hend in dramatic play-off
He had started the round three shots behind Australian Hend but the pair had to settle for a play-off. Defending champion Noren did complete his round and is within six shots of Hend after a two-under 68.

He left in disgrace for Ukraine in 2015 to work for the country's pro-Western authorities as governor of the key Odessa region on the Black Sea.

His supporters at the border crossing on Sunday claimed he had the ability to deal with Ukraine's corruption, overcome its oligarchy and end Ukraine's three-year eastern border region war with Russian Federation.

"I crossed the Polish border with a valid Ukrainian passport, the Poles stamped it", Saakashvili told reporters according to Ukrainian outlet Unian.

Finally, Saakashvili's supporters broke through a line of guards, the Reuters news agency reported, citing a Ukrainian border service spokesman's Facebook post. "I had none. As such, I can not say that we were friends".

Saakashvili divides opinion in Ukraine, which is at war with Russia-backed rebels in its east. Government officials at the border said 17 police and guards were injured during the confrontation with Saakashvili's supporters.

Mr Saakashvili has denied the accusations, branding them a political witch hunt.
