10 militants dead, nine Egyptian policemen wounded in Cairo shootout

Egypt is fighting an insurgency led by a local affiliate of the Islamic State group based in the Sinai Peninsula as well as Brotherhood factions like Hasm, which target members of the security forces in Cairo. The gunmen later opened fire with machine guns and commandeered a police pickup truck.

On Sunday, police said they stormed a militant hideout in a Greater Cairo district, killing 10 suspected militants and seizing a cache of weapons.

Monday's attack the deadliest against Egyptian security forces since July when ISIL killed 23 troops in Rafah. The wounded included a police brigadier general.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.

One source said authorities received a tip off about the hideouts of the individuals, who they suspect of being members of Hasm, a group which has claimed several attacks around the Egyptian capital targeting judges and policemen since past year.

In March, the military said militants killed 10 soldiers during an army raid in Sinai's central region.

It did not provide any casualty figures, but the attack appears to have been the deadliest on security forces in Sinai since July, when at least 23 soldiers were killed in a suicide auto bombing that targeted a checkpoint near the Gaza border. That was the deadliest attacks in two years.

Nine policemen, including four officers, were injured during the two raids, it said in a statement. They said the militants sneaked into the capital from northern Sinai.

Terrorist attacks, mainly targeting police and military, increased after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule.
