Mexico hit with magnitude 8.4 quake; strongest in 100 years

September 8, 2017-Late Thursday night, a massive magnitude 8.1 earthquake-the strongest to shake the country in 100 years-struck Mexico off the country's southern coast.

Countries including Ecuador, El Salvador and Guatemala could see waves of one metre or less, while Hawaii and the western and South Pacific are not believed to be in any danger.

While Mexican seismologists initially claimed Thursday's quake was a magnitude 8.4, the National Seismology Institute said Friday that it had revised its measurement and now believes it was an 8.2.

According to Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto, this was the strongest natural disaster to hit the country in 100 years with violent tremors leaving Mexican homes and buildings in ruins, and thousands seeking safety.

The quake has killed three people Chiapas and two in the neighboring state of Tabasco, according to reports thus far.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) PAGER system, which predicts economic and human loss after earthquakes has reported multiple aftershocks, some measuring over 5 in magnitude and has issued a red alert.

In Juchitan in Oaxaca state, parts of the town hall, plus other buildings including a hotel and a bar were reduced to rubble. Aftershocks are expected in the coming hourswith Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto stating that there have been more than 60 so far.
