Bhatkal unit, today joined the list of hundreds of organizations that are protesting against the murder of Senior Journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening.

"Law and order of Karnataka is the responsibility of the state government, under Congress. These killings are a threat to democracy and I appeal to everyone to unite and fight against radical and fascist Hindutva ideology which has paralyzed the entire country", said Pappu Dutta.

He said the Prime Minister could not react on everything.

GUJ secretary Gerard D'souza said in a press release, "The GUJ believes that the murder, and the manner in which it has been carried out, is a deliberate attempt to silence journalists and others who have been speaking up, questioning dominant narratives, and [shining] an uncomfortable light on the activities of fundamentalists, extremists and others who question the freedoms we all espouse".

Gauri's murder comes just days after the second anniversary of the killing of noted Kannada writer and rationalist Dr M M Kalburgi (77), who fell to bullets fired by two unidentified men at his residence at Dharwad in north Karnataka on August 30, 2015. "It is a sad reminder of danger the journalists facing from anti progressive forces", he said.

The Press Club also condemned the killing and demanded that the culprits be booked at the earliest.

"We learnt that the victim was shot dead from close range when she was standing at the gate of her house in Rajarajeswari Nagar (in the suburbs) around 8.30 p.m.", a senior police officer in Police Commissioner's office told IANS.
