QC soldiers going to Texas

The Nebraska National Guard was deployed to Texas nearly a week ago and has since been rescuing survivors, hauling food, water and even 500 pounds of blood to a local hospital.

The soldiers departed in two CH-47 Chinook helicopters from Muir Army Airfield at Fort Indiantown Gap yesterday and flew to Grand Prairie airport near Dallas.

The 44-person medical team will join 36 current Nebraska National Guard crew members now working in relief efforts.

On Sunday morning's supply mission, they delivered 8,200 pounds of food and water to Liberty County and Chambers County.

"Our thoughts are with the residents of Texas and all those impacted as they cope with the after effects of this devastating storm", said Governor Tom Wolf.

The 1,500 soldiers will join the 15 members for the Arkansas National Guard's 61st Civil Support Team that left on Monday.

"The soldiers will join Guardsmen from across the nation who are being activated in response to Hurricane Harvey", the Guard's statement reads. Their transport is a helicopter brought down by the National Guard from the Dallas area, but it has a story of its own.

The National Guard is dropping in more than supplies, but also hope to people who need it now more than ever. "This is a core competency of the National Guard".

The Iowa Army National Guard will head to Houston, Texas today to help with Hurricane Harvey.
