Mueller obtained draft of letter Trump wrote explaining Comey firing

The New York Times has spoken to a dozen administration officials and others who were briefed on this matter and have confirmed that Special Counsel Robert Mueller now has in his possession an early draft of a letter written by Stephen Miller at the direction of President Trump.

The letter was first reported Friday by The New York Times. White House counsel Don McGahn argued Trump should not send the letter to Comey.

In that sense, McGahn essentially backed himself into a corner: he tried to protect the president from firing Comey for a potentially illegal reason, but the fact that he thought the letter could put Trump in legal jeopardy means he will have to testify before Mueller's grand jury.

According to a Politico report, White House aides like now-fired staffer Reince Preibus tried to warn Trump against firing Comey because it could create a political "firestorm".

Mr Trump and his aides gave multiple justifications for Mr Comey's dismissal in the days after he was sacked.

Second, Trump seems to have forgotten his own White House's talking points.

Mr. McGahn arranged for the president to meet in the Oval Office that day with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Mr. Rosenstein, who he knew had been pursuing separate efforts to fire Mr. Comey.

Saudi Arabia reports 30 per cent increase in Hajj pilgrims from Qatar
Trump chose Saudi Arabia for his first overseas visit as president in May, two weeks before the Gulf crisis erupted. Other countries including Libya, Yemen and the Maldives have followed suit.

It's not hard to make the case that when Donald Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey in order to undermine an ongoing federal investigation into Trump's political operation, the president committed obstruction of justice.

Meanwhile, Preet Bharara, the former US attorney for the southern district of New York and now a professor at New York University's law school said, "Hard to assess significance without knowing the actual contents of the draft firing letter and why WH counsel vetoed it".

On Sept. 1, sources familiar with the federal probe into the Russian government's role during the 2016 election disclosed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had provided Mueller with a copy of an original draft of Trump's letter of dismissal to Comey.

"J$3 im Comey - he needs to be the target of an active criminal investigation for obstruction of justice, conspiracy and perjury", she demanded.

Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law, Jared Kushner were also in Bedminster that weekend, and Kushner was reportedly in favor of firing Comey.

After this letter is edited, Mike Pence then tells the media the Comey firing was not connected to the Russian probe, and he said it was due to Rod Rosenstein's recommendation...
