United Nations says concerned over plight of Rohingya Muslims

Nineteen bodies were recovered from the Bay of Bengal after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar trying to enter Bangladesh capsized in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar last night.

The army, responding to the August 25 attacks, launched what it called clearance operations against the insurgents. "Bangladeshi Hindus are helping them", he said. They have posted photos, videos and details on social media that they say serve as evidence.

The Burmese state is adamant the Rohingya are Bangladeshi citizens, a claim the Bangladeshi government has denied.

Myanmar evacuated more than 11,700 "ethnic residents" from the area affected by fighting, the army said, referring to the non-Muslim population of northern Rakhine.

The Rohingyas, who fled to India after violence in the Western Rakhine State of Myanmar, have settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan. Most Rohingyas are stateless.

On August 18, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had issued notice to the Centre over its plan to deport the Rohingya immigrants, who are residing in various parts of India. "My sister-in-law was shot with a gun". Since then, government forces have embarked on a widespread crackdown that led to reports of extrajudicial executions of civilians.

But testimonies gathered by AFP from the displaced reaching Bangladesh suggest some Rohingya men are heeding a call-to-arms by the militants.

The plight of the Rohingya made global headlines in 2015 when thousands of Rohingya were left stranded on boats in southeast Asia with no food or water because no country was willing to welcome them.

Omar said 64 young Rohingya men had enlisted in his unit over a two-day period, walking from squalid camps in Bangladesh to join the fight.

Sham Shu Hoque, 34, crossed the border with 17 family members.

The army says it is conducting clearance operations against "extremist terrorists" in response to the attacks on police posts. He said troops also used rocket-propelled grenades, and helicopters fired some sort of incendiary device.

"Only the military's commander in chief can protect the lives and the properties of the people", Wirathu said.

Nearly 400 people have died in Myanmar since the country's army stepped up a military crackdown on Rohingya Muslims last week.

The U.S. group Human Rights Watch said it has obtained satellite images that suggest burning villages across a large swathe of Rakhine state. The Rohingya people, who have been condemned to statelessness, now have nowhere to take refuge as the military mounts a relentless attack against them.

He said it was possible that violations had occurred on both sides.

United Nations special rapporteur Yanghee Lee expressed alarm Thursday about a worsening cycle of violence in the area that she said was "of grave concern" and "must be broken urgently".
