Lions' Matthew Stafford Becomes NFL's Highest Paid Player Ever

Multiple media outlets are reporting that the Detroit Lions and Quarterback Matthew Stafford have agreed on a contract extension. Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was previously the highest paid with a contract that pays him $25 million annually.

On July 7, 2013, Stafford agreed to a 3-year, $53 million extension with the Lions.

Stafford could have commanded $29 million or so based off the average value of playing under the franchise tag the next two seasons.

The $27 million average annual salary makes Stafford the NFL's highest-paid player. For his career, he's completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 30,303 yards with 187 touchdowns (49th most all time) against 108 interceptions.

But the two men parted company after an angry spat in 2014 and Madsen created his own space project, RLM Space Lab. The same day, Madsen was rescued from waters between Denmark and Sweden shortly before his submarine sank.

For Stafford, the goal (and reason for the pressure) is getting the team back to the playoffs and winning a game in the postseason for the first time since 1991. Should he win another Super Bowl between now and 2019, he might just end up as the NFL's first $200 million player.

"I'm assuming it's going to be a big change", Stafford told the Detroit Free Press in April on becoming a dad.

Last year Stafford led the Lions to a playoff berth despite losing future hall of famer, Calvin Johnson.

Stafford is heading into his ninth season. Stafford's best season came in 2011 when he threw for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns with just 16 interceptions for a rating of 97.2. He's also already a top-50 quarterback in National Football League history. statistically, ranking No. 39 in completions, No. 47 in attempts, No. 44 in yards, No. 49 in touchdowns and No. 23 in passer rating.
