IS attack on Afghan mosque draws wide condemnation among Afghans

Islamic State claimed responsibility for Friday's attack on a Shi'ite Muslim mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul that killed at least 14 people, the Sunni militant group's Amaq news agency said, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Scores of worshipers were inside the mosque in Kabul when at least four assailants, wearing police uniforms, stormed the compound, residents said. Initial reports claimed that few gunmen entered the Mosque and an explosion was heard after a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a Shiite mosque.

In the claim, IS says two of its fighters, seeking martyrdom, carried out the assault.

Police were promptly deployed at the site in a northern Kabul neighborhood and encircled the mosque. Other attackers then entered it. While he did not give specifics, senior US officials have said that he might send up to 3,900 more troops, with some deployments beginning nearly immediately.

"An attack on a place of worship during prayers is a horrific crime meant to maximize civilian deaths", said Patricia Gossman, senior Afghanistan researcher. Security forces have been unable to advance fearing even greater casualties.

In southern Kandahar province Friday, Afghan security forces repulsed a Taliban attack on an outpost overnight, according to provincial police chief's spokesman, Zia Durrani.

Najib Danesh, an interior ministry in Kabul, said special police units were dispatched to the area.

"The second attacker was gunned down by Afghan security forces", Mujahid added.

The assault underscores spiralling insecurity in Afghanistan as a resurgent Taliban steps up offensives across the country, while ISIL, known for carrying out sectarian attacks, expands its Afghan footprint.
