Verizon to start limiting video resolution on all plans

Verizon to start limiting video resolution on all plans

"We're doing this to ensure all customers have a great experience on our network since there is no visible difference in quality on a smartphone or tablet when video is shown at higher resolutions (than 720p on phones and 1080p on tablets)", Verizon told The Verge. Previously, customers could only get up to 10 lines of unlimited data on Verizon. Instead of charging $80 per month for unlimited data, talk, and text, Verizon will now offer unlimited service starting at $75 for a single line.

You're grandfathered into a previous unlimited plan if you have one, and you'll actually get 5GB more data at LTE speeds (15GB total) than you did before. It allows Verizon to slow down consumers' data speeds in times of congestion and does not include calling and data in Mexico and Canada. This morning, Verizon made some significant changes to its Unlimited plan that makes it more expensive and worse, and it's started throttling all smartphone video - on any plan, regardless of price - to 720p. That figure is slightly higher for tablets, at 720p, but 1080p is out of the question on both devices.

Mobile hotspot speeds are limited to a meager 600kbps. If you sign a two year contract that limit is upped to 25GB. Unlimited mobile hotspot data is capped at 600 Kbps and streaming video is limited to 480p for smartphones and 720p for tablets. The plan also offers 15 GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data, and retains the free calls, texts, and data in Mexico and Canada.

The 1080p limit will apply when customers use their mobile devices as hotspots, Verizon said.

Grace Mugabe has been granted diplomatic immunity by the South African government
Grace Mugabe returned to Zimbabwe Sunday morning with President Robert Mugabe, who had attended a regional summit in South Africa. Mrs Mugabe, 52, is accused of assaulting model Gabriella Engels a week ago at a Johannesburg hotel where her sons were staying.

Verizon insists that if you're on an unlimited plan, that won't change much.

The third of the three new plans is the Business Unlimited plan. Verizon customers can't watch 1080p video on their shiny new phones anymore. Subscribers could be throttled after exceeding 22GB in a billing cycle. Well, these claims are entirely baseless when you have a high-end smartphone with a screen that does justice to the 1080p full HD video quality.

Verizon signaled that it might start throttling video streams by default last month when it conducted a temporary test of a video optimization system that capped video speeds at 10Mbps. For example, T-Mobile throttled video for some customers. At the time, Verizon stated, "We've been doing network testing over the past few days to optimize the performance of video applications on our network. The test was across the board, and did not target any individual applications". It's technically unlimited service, but it sure won't feel like that in practice. The FCC's current chairman, Ajit Pai, has proposed eliminating the rules.
