The eclipse is over, here's what to do with those glasses

You had to get your hands on a pair of safe eclipse glasses for the eclipse-viewing parties that took place all across America on August 21, but now you may be wondering exactly what you're going to do with those much-needed spectacles. But if their glasses are not compliant with NASA's standards, it may be too late: Some lenses expire after three years, so be sure to check expiration dates.

In celebration of the solar eclipse yesterday, millions of Americans purchased and wore rectangular glasses made of paper, plastic or bamboo to protect their eyes from potential damaging effects. Otherwise, you can toss them in the trash.

The solar eclipse of the century is over.

There are a couple ways to give them a second chance a life.

Now you find yourself with a pair or two - or maybe more - of paper eclipse glasses and you don't know what to do with them. According to the Astronomers Without Borders website, they are working with their partners and sponsors to announce a plan for collecting the eclipse glasses, which will be announced shortly.

Back on Quartz, they have other suggested don'ts, including tweeting and instagramming photos of your dogs in eclipse glasses.

NASA says do not throw them out.

That's good news for those looking forward to the next eclipse that will occur across North America in 2024.

"Don't waste. Donate!" the program urges on its Facebook page while promising more information on where to send them soon.

You'll want to double check the expiration date and ISO number on the inside label before putting them on again.

But what should you do if you can't recycle your glasses - or you just don't want to part with them? The lenses can be popped up and recycled for camera film.
