Two Chinese tourists arrested for Hitler salute outside German parliament

The Chinese embassy in Berlin has warned its nationals to respect local laws after two Chinese tourists were detained for performing a Nazi salute in front of the city's parliament building.

Germany has strict laws on hate speeches and symbols linked to Adolf Hitler, a notorious figure in the Second World War, and his Nazi Party.

In 1933, shortly after Hitler had assumed power in Germany, the Reichstag burned down because of an arson attack. They were released on bail of 500 euros, or almost $600, each.

The two men were spotted posing with the banned gesture outside the historic landmark, taking selfies and pictures of each other with their phones.

They now face charges for "using symbols of illegal organisations" and were released after paying 500 euros ($589) bail each.

Instead, there were only two guards for the entire group, according to the Moscow Investigative Committee. Three security officers were injured, as well.

A police spokeswoman declined on Sunday to reveal further details, and said she did not know whether the tourists were still in Berlin, or even in Germany.

These men weren't the first tourists to try pulling off the Hitler salute in Germany.

The salute - with the right arm straight and angled slightly up, palm down - was used as a greeting and a way of expressing devotion to Hitler under the Third Reich.

The two men were taken to a nearby police precinct and questioned.

In Germany, Chinese tourists make up the largest majority of Asian tourists, according to research done in 2014 by the Mercator Institute for China Studies, a German think-tank.
