HTC VR Headset For China Needs No PC Or Smartphone

Though mobile-first VR solutions like Gear VR have existed for several years, selling on the market before the PC-based solutions were released, the move of HTC from tethered virtual reality to a wireless standalone unit signals a shift in the market.

The company broke the news at the ChinaJoy conference in Shanghai, and confirmed the headset will utilize Viveport - HTC's own virtual reality storefront - as its official content platform. Since then, an increasing number of companies are working towards making their devices compatible with Virtual Reality or VR. The only thing we know for sure is that it'll be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. Chinese technology giant HTC seems to be one of them. We also don't have details on the screen resolution or price point, but HTC did say it is aiming for this to be a more "affordable, yet high-quality VR experience", so we can at least hope it will be a little easier on the wallet. It also makes for a cheaper gaming setup as instead of investing in a high-end PC and VR setup, all players will need is to invest in a VR headset.

It appears like HTC and Qualcomm's upcoming stand-alone headset will fall in direct competition with Google's Daydream VR. A couple of months back, Qualcomm announced a partnership and reference design for Google's Daydream platform, a purpose-built experience for VR that extends beyond the capabilities of what Cardboard originally offered.

Germans accuse Turkey over arrest of human rights man
Amnesty International has openly criticised the crackdown and is calling for the release of Eser and the other activists. German authorities have also made a decision to toughen recommendations for their citizens on trips to Turkey .

China regional president of Vive, HTC, Mr. Alvin W. Graylin reportedly confirmed the aforementioned news. Although all-in-one VR devices would be much lower-performance in comparison, they would presumably be more affordable and thus open up VR to a broader audience.

The new headset is being made in conjunction with Qualcomm and will run on a Snapdragon 835 processor. The Viveport platform was introduced by HTC sometime past year and offers consumers with the option of streaming VR-content at their convenience. No release date was mentioned during the announcement, so whether or not this will beat the VIVE Daydream headset to market remains to be seen.
