'Please Stay Out': Wildfire scorches 7100 acres in Central Valley, triggering evacuations

Some 5,000 people were forced to leave their homes behind on Tuesday when mandatory evacuations were placed on numerous areas of Mariposa County, including the main town of Mariposa.

Only one structure has been destroyed in the Detwiler Fire so far according to CalFire's report, but 300 more structures are now threatened. The Range Fire was at 28 acres and 45 percent contained by 8:27 a.m. Tuesday, and at 6:44 p.m. Cal Fire reported it was at 20 acres and 85 percent contained.

The fire is being fueled by hot weather, heavy brush and tall grass, Cal Fire said.

Fire crews arrived quickly at the scene after the fires started at approximately 2:44 p.m.

There are more than 20 wildfires now burning in California, according to the Cal Fire website.

Thus far, the fire has burned approximately 11,000 acres, threatening structures near the areas of Hornitos, Bear Valley and Bagby. From Highway 49 on the south side of Mariposa, take Old Highway Road west to Highway 140 near Cathys Valley. Officials said that the patients and inmates are not being evacuated and that at this time it is safer to keep them where they are than to move them to a new location.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

George Bell-Uribe said it appeared that fire wasn't threatening his Mariposa-area home Wednesday morning.
