US President Donald Trump 'to visit United Kingdom in 2018'

US President Donald Trump (L) and British Prime Minister Theresa May (R) during the plenary session of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, 07 July 2017.

After months of doubt about the state visit, amid speculation the USA president could have made a surprise stopover after last week's G20 summit, the government has conceded that the official visit will not take place until 2018, according to reports.

Protesters were planning to swing into action at short notice at Mr Trump's golf courses in Scotland after a Conservative aide fuelled speculation that the president might make a flying visit, saying: "There are now no plans for him to visit".

Donald Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom will take place next year, senior Government sources have told The Independent.

The likelihood of the visit was cast into doubt when there was no mention of it in the Queen's Speech on June 21, when the British monarch set out the government's programme for the next two years.

Trump's visit was expected to happen this year, but senior government sources told Sky News that the commander-in-chief will not be in the country until next year.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer has said that Trump looks forward to visiting Britain but it will not be in the near future.

AP, Honda: Takata airbag inflator kills man fixing Accord at home
Honda says a man died in June 2016 when an inflator ruptured while he was working inside a 2001 Honda Accord using a hammer. Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, said in an email the company learned of the incident through a legal claim in March.

"The US president said he did not want to come if there were large-scale protests".

The invitation has been widely criticised.

President Trump won't be calling on London for the time being.

Trump also openly clashed with British officials in recent weeks, namely London Mayor Sadiq Khan. "We'll be ready for Trump and his unsafe, divisive politics next year", Nick Dearden, the director of Global Justice Now, told The Guardian.

"If a state visit takes place, that is way beyond and above the pay grade of the speaker", he said.

During their meeting at the G-20 forum in Hamburg earlier this week, US President Donald Trump told May that America was going to strike a trade deal with United Kingdom "very quickly", after Brexit, i.e. after Britain's exit from the European Union.
